Do you check if your gas engineer is working legally?

While you might be smart and call in someone to work on your gas appliance for you, do you know they are on the Gas Safe Register? Every gas engineer must be. This will ensure that they are professional and work to high standards.

It is illegal for people to work on gas appliances if they are not on the Gas Safe Register. An appliance like a boiler can become dangerous if you do not care for it the right way. This means that it is vital that you have a knowledgeable worker service and complete any repairs. Someone on the register will be able to work legally and will also have the right qualifications.

New findings

gas engineerResearch by the Government’s official gas registration body has found that many adults in the UK are making this mistake. A third (33%) of them do not check that the engineers they invite into their property to complete work are Gas Safe.

These latest research findings come following almost 2,000 investigations. These were done over three years to look into illegal gas work. They found that more than two thirds (69%) of these jobs were not safe. This left the occupants of the property in danger.

A shocking number of people (28%) did look into checking the registration of their engineer but did so incorrectly. They thought that they verified registration with Gas Safe when they saw a logo on a uniform or site. Also, 13% of people asked their gas engineer rather than using the Gas Safe site to check.

Why didn’t people check?

Those asked about why they failed to check if the engineer was working legally gave different reasons. Many people didn’t understand and thought that every gas engineer is on the register. Because of this, they didn’t know that they need to check. Other people said that they were in a rush or forgot to ask. Several individuals said that they were too embarrassed to ask.
